Jacques Sablet (1749 - 1803) was a Swiss painter. Son of a decorator and gilder from Lausanne, he studied with his father before moving to Paris in 1772; there he worked with Joseph-Marie Vien for three years. When in 1775 Vien was named director of the French Academy in Rome, Sablet accompanied him there. His ambition was to be a history painter, but facing competition from Jacques-Louis David and Pierre Peyron, among others, and lacking solid academic training, he could win no commissions. Instead he turned to portraiture , genre painting, and landscape painting. Most of his genre scenes depicted the city's everyday life and customs of the Campagna. Sablet shared a studio with history painter Hubert Drouais and was friends with Simon Denis. John Russell
English Painter, 1745-1806,English pastellist, painter, writer and astronomer. His father, also called John Russell (1711-1804), was a bookseller, printseller and amateur artist. Russell was educated at Guildford grammar school and won premiums from the Society of Artists for drawings in 1759 and 1760. He was apprenticed to Francis Cotes and set up his own practice in 1767. In 1770 he entered the Royal Academy Schools, London, winning the silver medal for figure drawing. He exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1768 and annually at the Royal Academy from 1769 to 1806. He was elected ARA in 1772 and RA in 1788, when he became Crayon Painter to King George III and to George, Prince of Wales. He painted some rather stilted portraits in oil
Victor C.Anderson
a well known Hudson River School painter, American , 1882-1937 was an American painter and illustrator, primarily known for his rural life scenes and landscapes, whose works were featured in Life and other magazines of the early 20th Century, and who produced a wide range of illustrations for books as well as oil paintings. Like his father, Frank Anderson, Victor was a well-known painter of the Hudson River School. Victor drew and painted from an early age, eventually entering the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. His favorite subjects were scenes of homespun rural life and landscapes of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, and were popular nationally. For many years, he lived and had his studio at 195 Battle Avenue, White Plains, New York, where he died in 1937. He exhibited in the National Academy. His daughter, Joan Howe (1915-2005), was a well-known watercolor artist .
